History

　　The population in Banciao and Tuchen, Taipei County in the 70's and the 80's was heavy; however, there was not any modern hospital in this area. Therefore, the seriously injured workers and critical patients should be transferred to Taipei City. Under the circumstance, many of them were delayed in receiving a proper medical treatment due to the long traveling distance. Mr. Y.Z. Hsu, the founder of Far Eastern Group, was aware of the situation and had based on his belief of "By the society, for the society" having Far Eastern Memorial Foundation setup for the construction of hospital, emergency rescue, free clinic for the poor and sick, and inspiring medical and medicine research. Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) was established in Banciao on April 1, 1981 and with 150 beds ready for service. FEHM was accredited by the Ministry of Education as the secondary teaching hospital to be in 1983, the secondary teaching hospital in 1985, district hospital in 1988, district hospital & teaching hospital in 1991~1997, and district hospital & Class II Teaching Hospital in 2000~2003.

　　FEMH has started a co-op program with National Taiwan University Hospital in 1999 under the leadership of Professor Shu-Hsun Chu for realizing the vision of "becoming a medical center". FEMH has been equipped with 1,043 beds since 2001 and accredited as the first medical center in Taipei County by the Department of Health in 2006. FEMH has a vision of "becoming a humanity medical center" established on the end of 2006 and with the mission of Far Eastern Memorial Foundation realized. In 2008, FEMH modified the vision to "patients' first choice of medical center".

  Service & Equipment

      There are 44 departments in FEMH including Cardiovascular Center, Internal Medicine Department, Surgery Department, Obstetrics & Gynecology Department, Pediatrics Department, and other medical departments. In terms of medical units, Clinicopathologic Department, Tissue Pathology Department, Medical Imaging Department, Nuclear Medicine Department, Nursing Department, Pharmacy and Dietary Department providing comprehensive medical services. In terms of equipment, modern instruments, for example, Dual Source CT, Tomo Therapy, and Flex Scanner, are imported in recent years to help upgrade diagnosis and therapy result. FEMH is with a floorage of 67,206㎡ constructed, 1,096 beds equipped for service, 4,000 outpatient visits a day, and around 400 patients treated a day in emergency room that is ranked in second place nationwide and with a hospital beds occupation rate over 85% documented. FEMH provides quality medical service to the residents of Taipei Metropolitan with comprehensive medical team and advanced medical equipment.

  Teaching

        FEMH was accredited as Class I teaching hospital in 2006. In addition to having training courses arranged in accordance with the core competence of FEMH, the "humanity" medical education is developed. FEMH has supported Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation to promote general medical education, teaching outpatient diagnosis plan, and positive medical teaching courses; also, to setup teachers' cultivation center, arrange teacher cultivation courses, upgrade clinical teaching and training quality, and cultivate medical talents. FEMH provides trainings to medical personnel comprehensively and with medical personnel assigned domestically or overseas for advanced education and modern medical technology. Sixteen medical personnel were delegated for advanced education overseas in 2004~2006 in order to help improve the medical quality of FEMH and link to the world.

   Research

        FEMH is with two laboratories, one animal laboratory, and 24-hour e-library setup for an excellent academic research environment. In addition to the financial support of Far Eastern Memorial Foundation, FEMH has research fund appropriated and distributed to the chief physician for clinical and basic research. In terms of medical research dissertation, FEMH had eighty dissertation (over two third of them were SCI dissertation) published in 2003~2006. The publication of dissertation on domestic and international articles is increased in number every year. Moreover, 51.6% chief physicians of FEMH had dissertations published in five years. FEMH has worked with Yuan Ze University and Oriental Institute of Technology to establish a comprehensive cooperation between academy and industry for continuing medical research and upgrading medical professionalism and quality.

   Management

       FEMH has an organizational structure setup including Planning Office, Internal Audit Department, Secretary Department, Information System Department, Human Resources Department, Accounting Department, Medical Matters, General Service Department, Capital & Goods Department, Maintenance Department, Quality Control Center, Health Management Center, Community Health Center, Social Work Office, Workers Safe Affairs Office, and Medical Engineering Office for business development. In recent years, FEMH has accomplished a great achievement in promoting quality circle, improving special project, defining standard operation procedure, introducing and substantiating ISO9001, applying balanced scorecard, and establishing vision-oriented management and medical information. FEMH is going to utilize information and Internet, unify data and quality control indexes, improve service quality continuously, fulfill patient's satisfaction, and work towards a humanity medical center.

   Prospects

      FEMH is active in having the number of beds and expansion of the second hospital substantiated. FEMH plans to work with Yuan Ze University and Oriental Institute of Technology to have a medical university setup for cultivating medical talents. FEMH expects to bring the best medical care in the world to the residents of Taipei Metropolitan with the most modern architecture and the warmest service in the near future.
