Introduction
For decades, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital FEMH) has
provided high-quality health care service to wide varieties of patients.
Moreover, FEMH has been one of the most important teaching hospitals in Taiwan.
To foster the medical education and develop specialists in medical field, our
hospital organized the committee on Medical Education to integrate overall
medical education affairs in 1982. In order to promote holistic health care
program in medical education, the Department of Medical Education was founded in
2007 and expanded into 5 divisions: Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) Center,
Clinical Skills Center, Center of Faculty Development (CFD), Library, and
division of Medical.
Education
The Department of Medical Education has contributed to the commitment of FEMH by
promoting diversity training programs for medical students and residents, and
establishing varied healthcare programs to encourage physicians and nurses for
continuing medical education.
Faculty
The department composes of 19 staffs with 1 director, 3 division chiefs, 1
section chief, 1 deputy section chief, 10 administration staffs, 2 full-time
assistants and 1 part-time staff.
Core services
The evidence-base medicine (EBM) center is in charge of
EBM training programs and workshops, EBM faculty development and clinical
guidelines establishments.
The clinical skill center offers clinical skill trainings and simulation
programs and is responsible for training of standard patients, OSCE assessments,
ACLS training and so on.
The center of faculty development (CFD) is in charge of faculty training
programs and workshops in order to enhance teaching quality.
Hardware
The division of medical education provides teaching
equipments, such as laptops, projectors and overhead projectors. Besides these
common equipments, advance facilities include scanner and poster printers.
Library offers many kinds of journals including e-journals, books, textbooks,
databases, publications and audio and video resources and facilities.
EMB center offers computers, journals, textbooks and database such as EBM
reviews.
Education and Research
Education and training programs: Post Graduate Year 1
(PGY1) training program, Grand Round and Mortality & Morbidity conferences,
fundamental medicine courses, holistic health care training programs, and X-ray
reading courses for trainees.
Research plan: Holistic health care research, ambulatory care teaching clinics research, and training curriculum research in medical education.
Future prospections
To supplement our hospital’s developments, to improve
patient-oriented holistic health care trainings and to catch up the latest
medical education trends, we expect to set up more and more student-oriented
training programs and to provide multimedia teaching materials and facilities,
such as e-learning system in the near future and elicit the enthusiasm of our
teaching faculty so that our hospital can be the first choice for medical
students and residents to have their training programs.
