The Far Eastern Memorial Hospital established a specialized division in neurosurgery since its founding in 1981. The division developed subspecialties in brain tumor, cerebral vascular diseases, head injury, spinal tumor, spinal degenerative diseases and spinal trauma. At present, the division has six attending physicians, one resident and six nurse practitioners, and is one of the neurosurgeon training centers in the country. The division's central mission is to do our utmost in the continuous improvement of quality of care for severe and critical patients.
The division is capable of performing all kinds of neurological surgeries; for example: brain tumor, cerebral stroke, hydrocephalus, congenital disorder, cerebral vascular disorder, spinal disease, trauma, palmar hyperhidrosis, stereotactic surgery, minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic surgery.
The division has been equipped with surgical apparatus including intra-operative ultrasound, endoscope, operative microscope, evoked potential machine, radiofrequency generator, radiographic fluoroscopy, transcranial Doppler, etc. For years, the division has achieved commensurable results of treatment in brain tumor, aneurysm and cerebral infarction, compared with the other medical centers.
The division has also cultivated a strong mission in educational training, and we have trained many outstanding neurosurgical specialists over the years. Through careful medical researches, the doctors in the division have gained extensive understanding and published many scientific papers on topics such as cerebral stroke, brain tumor, cerebral edema, cranial trauma, and sympathetic nervous system.
Success relies on the cooperation of related-teams. In the future, the division will strive for a vision of co-creating a neurology institute by involving the other related divisions in the hospital in high hopes of enhancing the quality of medical services and basic medical researches.
