Cancer Medicine

FEMH has passed the “Quality Certification System of Cancer Diagnosis” by participating and passing the multiple certifications for the care service quality in “Neck and Head Cancer” and “Breast Cancer.” FEMH conforms to the national level of cancer diagnosis and therapy, and even the Asian-standard. According to the FEMH statistics compiled between 2020 and 2021, the number of persons screened for cancer in average exceeds 36,000 people per year. The number of new diagnosed cases in 2020 hit 2,832 people.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Since the introduction of multiple advanced instruments and equipment in 2010, over 20 new surgeries in Taiwan or abroad have been completed: Laparoscopy for liver transplant surgery, hilar cholangiocarcinoma resection and biliary duct reconstruction, Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence dye for prevision positioning of liver segment resection or others. FEMH has accumulated many surgical experiences and held multiple international meetings and surgical demonstration, including the 12th and past Taiwan Laparoscopic HBP Forum from previous years. Nearly 80 experts from all countries have been invited to deliver the speech and upgrade the standards of domestic minimally invasive liver surgery and promote international academic exchange.

Cardiovascular Medicine

The cardiovascular disease surgeries and intervention treatment vary constantly. In 2018,FEMH established the “Far Eastern Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery Center” and became the first “minimally invasive valve surgery center” in Taiwan to integrate with cardiovascular surgery. In the same year, President Kuan-Ming Chu was awarded with the “National Innovation Award” through “Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery.” With regards to Cardiac Catheterization, FEMH was the first team in Taiwan to launch the Cardiac Catheterization via artery bypass graft, with an execution ratio maintained over 95%. Under the leadership of Cardiovascular Center director Yen-Wen Wu, the center has received the “Coronary Disease-Specific Care Certification”  of the Joint Commission of Taiwan since 2010 and became the first hospital to pass the “Heart Failure Disease-Specific Care Certification” from the Joint Commission of Taiwan in 2018, and FEMH has been passing the certification as of today.

Instruction Innovation

As a medical center, FEMH not only needs to provide the public with quality medical care services but also bears the major mission of “heritage.” FEMH set up the instruction department and relevant department in charge of hospital medical education and established the instruction software/hardware facility for fostering medical professionals. The Medical Education Committee supervises and promotes the development of “innovative and friendly teaching.” The committee develops the objectives and policies of instruction: train faculty with implementation holistic care education, provide talent training with necessary core competence, advocate for the implementation of holistic care education, introduce technology assisted teaching, improve the teaching method of medical education, review teaching outcome, and improve teaching plan and teaching model.

Cell Therapy

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the amendment articles to the “Regulations Governing Specific Medical Technology Examination Instrument Implementation or Management” in September, 2018. Vice President Chih-Hung Chang, also known as the current director of Taiwan Association Regenerative Medicine, led the research team to apply for the “Using mesenchymal cell transplantation of Autologous Fat for treatment in Osteoarthritis” with EMO BIOMEDICINE. FEMH passed the review by Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2019 and became the first hospital in Taiwan to be approved for using the mesenchymal cell transplantation of autologous fat for treatment in osteoarthritis. FEMH established the most advanced and complete cartilage regeneration medical center, so that cell therapy becomes the new “knee” hope for patients. In response to the government promotion of regulation governing the development of cell therapy and the fast changes in the multiple technologies of cell therapy, the Cell Therapy Center was established in October 2020 to continue the promotion of related research and service.

Total Quality Management

FEMH promotes total quality management through the three dimensions of quality promotion, quality monitoring and patient safety, in addition to developing various quality strategies. To reach consensus in hospital employees for medical quality and patient safety, the various mechanisms are adopted to convey the consensus to all employees:

 
  • Establish the quality management framework of all departments of FEMH.
  • Seeds of various quality management fulfill their duties by discussing the quality issues in departmental or cross-department meetings.
  • The various quality improvement incentives are developed to specifically encourage employees with participation of quality related activities.

 

Smart Hospital and Friendly Services

Upholding to innovation philosophy and blending technology development trends, FEMH combines “Healthcare” and “Technology” to develop a total smart hospital annually from the patients to the healthcare and logistics backbone. Smart hospitals not only provide patients with friendly medical treatment process but utilize technology to protect patient safety and quality, thereby boosting the operation and decision-making efficiency.

 

5G Telemedicine

To provide healthcare service to remote areas, FEMH collaborates with Far EasTone to develop telemedicine appointment. Starting from 2020, FEMH offers telemedicine services for Endocrinology & Metabolism Division and Ophthalmology Department in Shidin, Wangli, and Lianjiang. FEMH is the first hospital in Taiwan to offer 5G telemedicine care.Following the pandemic breakout in 2021, most people feared for infection and refused to visit the hospital for medical treatment. The telemedicine platform was extended to provide the public with a safe medical treatment approach while adding the convenience and safety for hospital, thereby helping the maintenance of doctor-patient relation and psychological health. In 2021, during the most rigorous period of the pandemic situation, the service volume for telemedicine accounted for as high as 11.7% of the FEMH clinic service. As of the end of 2021, the telemedicine clinics have been offered to 28 divisions, providing services to 10,480 people. Moreover, telemedicine complies with information security regulations and passes the ISO-27001 and STAR certifications. The patients’ information security is taken into account while providing telemedicine services, which was awarded with by the Joint Commission of Taiwan with National Healthcare Quality Award – Smart Medical Solution Mark.

Diversity of Payment Modes

Providing clinical and inpatient with diverse payment modes: automatic payment machine, Taiwan Cooperative Bank Mobile APP debit care payment, Happy cash, and Healthcare payment APP.The average number of monthly use of automatic payment machine in 2021 was approximately 46,815 people, accounting for 50% of the clinical payment. The average monthly use of E-HEALTH PAY APP was 1,300 people in August, which was increased to 8,638 people by the end of 2021. FEMH continues to optimize the payment mode to provide services to patients with convenient and reinforced pandemic prevention through reduction of contacts. The statistics on clinical non-counter payment rate rose from the 33% in 2016 to the 56% in December 2021.

Optimized clinical healthcare and admission/discharge process

The publica visiting multiple divisions can concurrently complete the registration and check for progress by division from the multi-function guide machine. Patients can evaluate for the priority of visit, thereby shortening the waiting time. The public can also check the clinical progress from the website, multi-function guide machine, FEMH Healthcare APP and LINE. Additionally, the accessibility counter gives priority to patients with physical disability and seniors with payment services. The clinic office and examination by division offers priority services to senior aged 85 years or older, providing a senior-friendly medical environment.

To clarify the and guide public with direction for appointment, examination room and ward, different colors and images/text are provided for guidance of direction. Patients will receive Line message for the map of examination room according to the items of examination, thereby reducing time for public to search for the location. The volunteer service also offers services to patients. Under the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, FEMH offers fast access and reducing contact so that patients will not need to enter the hospital, including outdoor quarantine clinic, outdoor self-paid test and drive-thru-medicine.

 

One-Stop Service for Admission and Discharge

FEMH specifically designs the one-stop service for admission and discharge. The patients will be reminded for application prior to the admission and patients are encouraged to apply for “hospital discharge at the nursing station. If the system is remarked for discharge today, the Line message will automatically remind patients for pre-application of documents one day before discharge, with a specialist printing the documents at the nursing station. Patients are encouraged to pay by “Healthcare payment APP” remotely and will not be delayed for discharge due to standing in line. The public can directly receive medical bill invoice, diagnosis certificate and post-hospitalization medicines, after completing the payment, in order to complete the discharge procedures.

Develop the various social work services for disadvantaged patients, including assistance with financial problems to patients, disease adaptation counseling, discharge preparation and placement follow-up, patient service, assistance with women/children protection cases, organ donation and transplant evaluation, early development family evaluation and parental education, services for persons with physical disability, hospice care, tumor social worker service, assisting tool service, community promotion, and long-term care.

 

Community Health Building

In response to population aging, health promotion in elderly and social care become increasingly important. FEMH promotes the various health promotion and health education services, boost the health awareness in community public, and health promotion for seed training, community health management E-transformation, which will help establishing senior friendly culture and support the validity of health promotion intervention.

 

FEMH integrates resources in and outside the hospital, collaborating with fitness center, library, schools, care centers, and community village heads. FEMH co-organizes diversity of activities with professional personnel from the hospital, including campus vaccination, community cancer screening, health seminar, volunteer training, weight loss class, and muscle boosting class. FEMH organized 569 sessions of activities in 2021, with 90,411 people participated. In spite of the COVID-19 impact in 2021, FEMH complied with government regulations governing pandemic prevention, hosted health promotion activities, organized self-exercise management and online classes to keep health moving.

Dementia Center

The Department of Health, New Taipei City Government allied with seven hospitals in New Taipei City in March 2017, to build the first New Taipei City Dementia Community Care Network in Taiwan, which established the foundation for local aging care of elders with dementia in New Taipei City. The Far Eastern Dementia Center was officially established in October, 2020, taking responsibilities in coordinating the communities, healthcare and administrative services related to dementia of FEMH. The center is committed to improve care quality and attempts to receive the most complete and proper treatment and care for all stages of the disease course. The center provides complete case management services to persons with dementia and families with greater needs, and thereby improving the living quality of seniors with dementia, thereby meeting the objectives of sustainable management. The center was also certified by the Joint Commission of Taiwan in 2021 for the Dementia Disease-Specific Care Certification.


 

Health Hospital

FEMH is member of international health promotional medical institution network. For years, FEMH has promoted various health hospital promotional works by establishing the “Community Development and Health Promotion Committee.” The committee comprises of healthcare division, nursing division, social worker office, nutrition division, and occupational safety head office, planning office, and work affairs office to expand committee affairs through horizonal collaboration with fewer efforts.

The health hospital emphasizes on the optimization of health hospital evaluation index, using electronic medical history to expand the breadth of health promotion intervention in patient’s clinical care, and boosting the team care efficacy. The electronic version of health education constitutes the traditional paper-based versions so that the acquisition of health information becomes more convenient. The public’s knowledge is improved to maintain “Good Health and Well-Being.” FEMH was recognized by a gold medal in 2020 health hospital certification evaluation with excellence ward in 2020 health hospital paradigm. FEMH will continue to improve and make a commitment to become the most environmentally friendly and the top-choice hospital for the community, the elderly and the public.

Medical Services International

Transnational medical services and exchanges have become an international trend. In 2007, FEMH set up the International Medical Affairs Office to take charge of international cooperation and exchange. The purpose is to share with the world FEMH’s medical technologies and practices, so as to achieve the sustainable development goal of good health and well-being for people of different races, ages, and socioeconomic statuses.
