Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity with individuals who are limited by physical injury or illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities, or the aging process in order to maximize independence, prevent disability, and maintain health. Recently, due to an increasingly older population and higher incidences of chronic physical and mental disorders, the need for occupational therapists is critical in Taiwan. Based on the belief of meeting the needs of the society, the Department of Psychiatry in Far Eastern Memorial Hospital founded the program of Occupational Therapy.

      Started in the 2002, we have recruited the first Occupational Therapist and then there are currently 4 full-time certified OTs  to provide occupational therapy in the acute ward, day center, sheltered  workshop, OPD , and community mental rehabilitation center. There are full of variety in our services including assessment, individual psychotherapy, therapeutic activity, vocational rehabilitation, recreation therapy, art therapy ,  …etc. Our patients are diagnosed as schizophrenia, affective psychoses, substance abuse, dementia , depression, anxiety disorder, dissociative disorder, sexual and gender identity disorder, eating disorder, sleep disorder, adjustment disorder and personality disorder. In addition to the adult severe mental illness, we also apply occupational therapy to the child and adolescence with ADHD, autism, mental retardation, learning disorder.

In order to ensure our quality, we keep joining continued education and have the detailed training program for fresh OT and OT student. In addition, we truly believe that we have to develop the evidence-based occupational therapy to brig our patients with effective services. According to the believe, we have also engaged in clinical researches and used them in our OT programs.
