Based on the positive effect of the 3.5-year term CKD prevention project in Belize, it drives the importance of prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease in Central and South American area. In 2019, FEMH expands the experience to Nicaragua and cooperates with Nicaragua Ministry of Health (MINSA) and TaiwanICDF to implement a 3-year term project for strengthening chronic kidney disease prevention and control system by assisting in updating the health strategies of CKD, strengthening the capacity of (early) CKD diagnosis and clinical treatment, and improving the capacity of families and communities in health management of CKD. The project is the first Taiwan’s public health medical aid project in Nicaragua.
In May 2019, FEMH Nephrologist Dr. Shu, Kai-Hsiang and 2 IT engineers Mr. Jhang, Wun-Jyun and Mr. Huang, Sheng-Jhe conducted project site visit for medical service investigation and kick-off meeting in Nicaragua. On 20 June 2019, FEMH officially received the cooperation board from TaiwanICDF

Started from July 2019, FEMH successively assisted 8 Nicaraguan internists, nurses, and ESAFC personnel in CKD case management and clinical health education training for 2 months. Also, 2 IT engineers received the training for developing the case management system under Nicaraguan Registro Nacional de Enfermedad Renal (RENER) for 3 months.
In October 2019, 2 Nicaraguan health policy decision makers visited Taiwan to understand the health institutions, case management strategies and health promotion methods in Taiwan. In November, FEMH Nephrologist Dr. Wu, Hon-Yen, Dr. Pai, Mei-Fen and CKD educator Ms. Lin, Yi-Han respectively conducted on-site follow-up assessments to seed instructors, collected indicator guidance for the evaluation of the quality of dialysis patient care, and understand the certification model of nephrologist training program. In 2020, FEMH continues training 11 Nicaraguan seed instructors and 1 nephrologist for 2-year term specialist, bus also assisting in building up the CKD case management system to strengthen CKD prevention and control system.
